Our History
In 2006, Rick Lundy’s wife experienced a life-threatening medical incident that could have been preventable. After this event, Rick Lundy started reaching out to the media only to find that other members of society had experienced (similar) adverse medical incidents that could have been preventable. Rick, along with other individuals, formed an organization called Open Arms Patient Society.
This organization assists individuals and/or their families who experience adverse medical events, helps gain information from Alberta Health Services, facilitates systemic changes to the medical system and offers support to the affected individuals. Open Arms has assisted hundreds of healthcare users and facilitated numerous systemic changes, making the healthcare system safer and more efficient. It has also educated medical students on compassionate care, helping them become better medical professionals.
Through Rick’s work with Open Arms, he started to recognize gaps in the healthcare system related to mental health that he believed could be filled through education for members of the public. Minds Over Matter Mental Health Society was later established to help support with the following: education, prevention and community.
Over the years, Minds Over Matter has facilitated support groups for mental health and even formulated a program called Barrier Free Counselling that provides free counselling for young adults between 18 and 35 who make an annual income of 35k or less.
